I pronounce it like Fun-Gee, my mom pronounces it like Phone-Jee. Who cares! It’s delicious and really simple!

You will need,

2 cups of cornmeal,

6 cups of water,

4 okras (yes, only four, not four packs, four),

2 tablespoons of butter

and salt to taste

Rinse and chop up the okras.

Boil water in a pot then set the heat to medium. Put the okras in the water and cook until you can put a fork through an okra. Drain the okras. Combine half the water and all of the cornmeal in the pot. Put the heat to medium. Stir until the mixture is smooth.

Add the butter and the okras. Add 3 more cups of water and boil it. Remove the heat and then you are done!

Real nice and simple!

Next up is Argentina!

2 cups cornmeal

3 cups water

Salt to taste

4 okras (washed, cut into pieces)

2  tablespoons butter or margarine.

Bring water to boil with okras over medium heat until they are cooked. Mix cornmeal, salt and water into a bowl with a wooden spoon until the cornmeal mixture becomes smooth and lump less.  Add the cornmeal mixture to the cooked okras. Use a wooden spoon to stir constantly to avoid lumps. Add more water if needed. Reduce the heat to low. When mixture becomes smooth add the butter or margarine then remove from heat.

  1. Fungi founds like a great side dish for dinner. Strange question, but did the okra turn out slimy after you cooked it? Every time I have attempted to cook okra it ends up slimy. From what I had read, that often happens with okra, and it all depends on how it is prepared.

  2. I think fungi CAN be slimy depending on what kind it is. The edible is not. Oh yea- it should rhyme with “fun guy” when you pronounce it. Here’s the joke….A mushrooms walk into a bar. The bartender says , “I’m sorry but we don’t serve your kind.” The mushroom, somewhat insulted, says to the bartender , “whadda ya mean ???? I’m a fun guy!!!”
